Hey all! Wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience of their chicks making nests for laying in the fluffy, thick bedding and if anyone had any secrets to share to get them to lay in the right place!

Should I mention that it's just the salmon faverolles that are doing this?

I've done deep litter for the past year, but I struggle with a few of my girls nesting down into it and making themselves too comfortable. I have a roll out box that 7 of them lay eggs in, which is great. But if the bedding gets deeper than 2 inches I have to do an unrewarding Easter egg hunt just to find broken and poopy eggs.

I cleared it all out and put down 2 inches of hemp, but I definitely miss how wonderfully the deep litter took care of all the smells! Everyone is laying in the box, but maybe I just have to figure out what's more important to me. 😂 😭

(8x8 coop, 16x16 protected run, 1/4 acre yard to free range, 24/7 access to water and food, etc etc etc lol)

How many birds and how many nests?
How old are all the birds?

Fake eggs in nest has always worked here....tho new layers can take time to figure it out.
