Hi we have a two hens both have been broody in recent months. Hadn't had any eggs layed in the coop for a few weeks today discovered a dozen eggs in one area of the garden. How do we get them to lay in the coop again? They are free range, do we need to fence them in an area close to the coop? Any advise would be appreciated thanks Mummashazz :)

Hi there, and

There are a couple of things I would recommend. Firstly, yes, lock them up for a week, either in their coop (if it is big enough, that is) or in a run attached to their coop, so that the only place they can lay is within that confined area.

Secondly, I'd make sure there are some fake eggs - golf balls will do - in the nesting boxes to indicate to them that "this is where we lay."

Finally, make sure the nest boxes are inviting. Lots of fluffy hay or wood shavings so they can hunker down and get comfy to lay. If the nest boxes are positioned in the darkest spot in the coop, even better. They like to feel like they have a nice, secluded, private spot.

Good luck!

Hi Krista
Thanks for your reply, went out to feed them this morning and one of them had layed in the box, must of heard me saying I was going to lock them up lol. Will take your advise put fresh straw and a few dummy eggs in and hopefully all will be back to normal. Regards Sharon :cd

I'd lock them up.

Free range birds sometimes need to be 'trained'(or re-trained) to lay in the coop nests, especially new layers. Leaving them locked in the coop for 2-3 days can help 'home' them to lay in the coop nests. They can be confined to coop 24/7 for a few days to a week, or confine them at least until mid to late afternoon. You help them create a new habit and they will usually stick with it.
