I have 7 hens that are 27 weeks now and I have been getting around 5 eggs a day. Lately the egg production has dropped to 2 a day. Someone in another post said they might have lice or worms. I have looked into their feathers for lice but I have no idea what I am looking for. They have brown dust in there down and that is I am guessing form all the dirt they roll around in. What do lice look like? How do you tell if your chickens have worms or is this something to just treat for. They all seem very healthy and are eating and drinking well.
Are these the things I should look for or does someone have any suggestions what I should do? John

I would just wait a bit. It seems everyone is having a little dip now.

If you're experiencing sudden changes in temps like we are, this does interfere with regular egg laying. We went from 90 one week down into the 40's the next. It wreaks havoc on the hens cycle. I agree..give them time to adjust.

It has been going from the 50's at night to 90 today. The hens run form shade to shade all day and have been panting. I placed extra waterers around the yard so they have fresh cool water. That could be the issue and I try to keep them healthy and happy. I will try to wait it out. Just being cautious. John

On the days you see them panting (and wings spread out), add vitamins and electrolytes to their water. It helps keep them hydrated, which is necessary for egg laying.

Long story short, I have a broody buff orp that I can't seem to break. I bought some fertile eggs from Myer. I have a cage in the covered run that I didn't know what to do with. I remolded it, built a nest box and getting ready to place things in their place. I moved a piece of plywood I had leaning in the corner and low and behold. 10 nice brown eggs layed it a community nest the hens made deep in the straw. Now that answers my questions. I have searched the yard many times hoping to find some but never thought to look under my nose. John
