(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I had a few chickens growing up, and my Aunt was a "collector", hah! She had a humongous pond with nearly 100 assorted free-range poultry. Nearly 20 years later, I went to Tractor Supply and bought 6 little chickens. Hubby build a coop in our urban backyard, and I put together a brooder. I am chronically lazy and don't like to spend money, so this was first a rubbermaid bin with bedding and a lamp. As the chickies grew, it became an upside-down card table with cardboard duct-taped between the legs as walls, shelf liner I found in my pantry along the underside of the table, bedding, and a heating lamp suspended from my garage ceiling. After losing my favorite two to a hawk, I mourned by getting 8 little fertile eggs (ordered online) in an incubator I DIY'd from a styrofoam cooler and my husband's old computer.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Currently (5/22/20) I have four teenagers and four fluffs in a brooder. 4 other eggs (candled healthy on day 16) have pip'd in my aforementioned DIY incubator!
(3) What breeds do you have? Speckled Sussex, Olive Egger, and the rest TBD.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? They are so cute and hilarious! I love interacting with them, and my husband loves the natural pest-control/fertilizer for his garden.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I love to research anything random, grow our own produce in our "urban homestead" and we play a lot of D&D
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I live with my husband, my 2.5 year old son, and my brother-in-law. We have two dogs (1 mutt and 1 shar-pei), and in the American Midwest. Our dream is to live on land we own and homestead full time, but for now we live in the city and have what is turning into an "urban homestead". My brother-in-law regularly has nightmares about waking up to 100 chickens in his bedroom, hah!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Google, 2 months, I want to ask questions!
