My son was plinking at a varmit and had sat the can of pellets next to him. There was a spill and one of the chickens quickly ate a couple. Any thoughts on what to do or what will happen to the hen? I know which eggs are hers, so can avoid eating them, but will it kill her? I am prepared to cull her if need be. I dont want her to suffer.

I'd give her some olive oil on bread to get that through her quickly. Lead will kill them, yes. You don't want it to get to her gizzard and decide to stay there.

I don't think I would worry about it. The way pellets are made they are much to hard for her gizzard to grind it and no more than that would be an issue if she could.

I hope you're right. That would be wonderful news.

I guess I'm so used to lead and zinc poisoning with exotics. It takes them down so badly.

Newer pellet and sinker products usually use a lead substitute. Check the package. If it is lead it wont pass. It will sit in the crop and slowly poison the bird. Thats why we use steal shot on water fowl, in NY. It prevents other birds that dive for plants from consuming missed shot.
