Hi all. I am totally new to the world of chickens. My husband had chickens as a child. I plan to read up on what they need, the type to get, and all the equipment and start purchasing those items in the next couple of months. Ideally, we will purchase our first chicks in the Spring. Looking forward to learning. Thanks.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You have come to the right place for all the fun and learning! You might start in our learning center. Lots of good articles on getting started, raising the chicks, building the coop and keeping your adult flock happy, healthy and safe from predators...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Enjoy this new journey you are on! If you have any questions along the way, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Raising chickens is fun and rewarding. There is tons of information out there but you will make mistakes and learn from them. We've all been there, done that. Cruise CL on a regular basis when looking for chicken supplies and materials to build your coop and run. If you have a local restore for building supplies, you can also find doors, windows, siding... You will save a ton of money spending the winter to build as you have the time and supplies.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. There are some good chicken breed charts at http://albc-usa.etapwss.com/images/uploads/docs/pickachicken.pdf, http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/breed-list.aspx, and http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html that are nice for learning about the pros and cons of the various breeds. Also, Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html for helping you determine which breeds or hybrids are best for you. Just be sure and post on "show more characteristics." Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your flock.
