Leaves as bedding

Yikes, hope you weather the storm OK. The dry for months then big rain is nasty...I'm sure there will be plenty of flooding and erosion, as the dry soil just can't take the moisture.

On the bright side, I'm sure all that wind is knocking MORE leaves off the trees for you!

I spent about 4 more hours today collecting leaves and dumping them in the chicken run. Also topped off my 14'x7' compost pile with leaves to serve as a carbon cache for all the things I add that don't go to the flock (not that they don't just jump the fence and enjoy the pile, but anyway).

That's okay. They'll just help to break down that compost quicker, find some bugs to eat and get some free entertainment.

Oh 100%. When I had more birds (80 compared to 20 today) I gave them full access to the compost area just for that reason. Since all the food scraps go to the chickens, the only thing in the compost is leaves, paper, and coffee grinds.

I raked the front yard today. About 1/3 of the leaves went into the chicken run, the rest on the garden. Total of 7 large loads hauled in a tarp.

I'll be raking again; the oaks are nowhere near bare yet. Some of the leaves are still green.

Side note I've always used my oakleys for years and the chicken run it's very helpful mixing it with the pine shavings etc but this is the first year one of my chicken got lice. I can't help but wonder if the lice might have been in the leaves from a wild bird? Now I'm hesitant to use the leaves.
