We are planning an overnight trip and are having trouble finding a neighbor to open/close the coop. Is it okay to leave them in for a day? The high will be 50 and the low 40, so they won't overheat.

Thoughts?

Given that you have enough space, they should be okay. Having said that, many of my major problems (including a flock massacre by a dog) have occurred in my absence.

How many birds and how big a coop?

Mine stay cooped up often during inclement weather, sometimes for days at a time.

All seven were fine. They're back to laying - it was a stressful week what with a possum getting in and then being cooped up for a day. We got back in time to let them out for a couple of hours before dark, and they were just fine.

If you have a run, you can leave the coop door open as long as the run is secure and locked up tight. If you free range, keep them locked in the coop. Either way, they will be ok. I never lock my chickens in the coop (we have a run) and they are fine and I'm confident they are safe. Best wishes!
