Leg banding?

I use spiral leg bands. I like them because they will expand as a chick grows, they are easy to put on, and they come in a lot of colors and sizes. The downside is the sharp plastic points on the end can hurt them if not cut off.

I have had chickens come to me with wing bands. They don't interfere with showing, and they don't seem to bother the chickens. But I have not tried it, myself. One of the sites that sells the wing bands has a video on how to put a wing bands on chicks. It's kind of like piercing ears.

I have used the ABA permanent bands, but you have to be sure you have the right size for the breed and sex, and you have to put them on when the chick is young enough for the whole foot to slip through, which means they sometimes fall off and you have to put them back on again and again, until they stay.

I mostly use the numbered spiral bands, and mostly at shows. I don't usually leave them on, because they can sometimes mud-up and have to be removed, like mud-toe. Same thing happens with zip ties, so you have to check them regularly. But I have my chickens in breeding pens, so I know who is who, and don't need bands on a regular basis.

also use colored zip ties (4") because cheap and lots of colors, require nothing special to apply. That said, they do have to be frequently replaced with young birds during peak growth.
Ditto Dat.
But some small end cutters are a good tool to have for removing.
..and yes, gotta keep a good eye on them as they grow.

Thought I'd add, they do sometimes break fall off eventually, then need to be replaced. At on point I replaced them all just because a couple had fallen off.
