Any advice on problems with leg bands for identification and record keeping. Are there any practical homemade substitutes that you know of? Thanks, Victor

I read that one should never use red to mark your chickens because it causes the other chicks to peck, and can lead into cannibalism. Is that true?

I have some red and orange velcro strips on my black/blue/splash orps since they were chicks ...no problems....

One word of warning with those zip ties for leg bands. Be very careful not to pull too tight or you might have a terrible time taking it off. In addition, on young growing birds, keep a very close eye on their growth and change them for a bigger one, as you don't want it to grow into their leg. I've seen a few chicks with spiral chick bands that they outgrew and their legs were a mess with the band stuck in the leg.
