I recently rescued 11 chickens. One is an EE with leg mites. I bought campho-phenique and vaseline. Which one should I use - or should I use both? How often should I do this and for how long. The legs look really bad - very scaley, bleeding, and she can hardly stand. All the other chickens look ok. Should I treat them the same way?

I've been reading a lot on this subject and everyone does it differenty. I'm interested in feedback from people who have dealt with chickens with severe cases of leg mites. I really prefer not to have to use toxic chemicals or drugs if possible.

Advice greatly appreciated. I feel so bad for her because she seems so miserable.

Thanks

I have plastered vaseline on the legs so that they are completely covered and find it works well and quickly. Maybe when it is severe you will need to do more than once. Good luck.

You can also soak her legs to help clean the up and remove any loose stuff. Then apply a heavy amount of vaseline. You might have to re-apply every day for a couple days. You will start to notice the scales will fall off and new one comming in. It might not be a bad idea to coat everyones legs.

Well, I soaked her feet and dried them. Then put a little campho-phenique on the areas that were bleeding and slathered on the vaseline. I hope this works. She's so depressed and really skinny. I hope this helps her feel better.

I'm getting an order of chicks next week. They will be kept in my basement so as long as I wash my hands really well, my chicks should be fine right?

Thanks for the replies!
