Leg scale mites

i wa looking at a thread from 2014 regarding leg scale mites. I believe, and thank you for the excellent photos from Bahana ( I’ll recheck the members name fter I post), that my Roo has same affliction.
I wonder the outcome of your treatments?
Beginning of winter now, nervous about how I cannot wash the coop at this season, but I’ll begin by treating the roo with the one leg swollen with what seems to be leg scale mites.

Do yourself and your chickens a big favor and treat ALL of your birds for scaly leg or scaly foot mites. A good slathering of petroleum jelly on the foot shanks, or a short immersion in kerosene, diesel oil, heating fuel etc will control or cure scaly leg (foot) mites. Instead of wasting time and money washing your coop, paint the roost poles with the same oils and or treat the roost poles with Permethrin insecticide spray.

Oh, BTW.... :welcome

Tomorrow husband and I are going to treat all the flock : 8 hens and 2 Roosters ...yikes about handling the biggest Roo.
We are familiar with Neem oil and have a couple litres on hand. Have used a spray of it in the garden. Neem oil , from a tree in India, systemically prevents the reproduction of mites.
Not sure if we’ll wash every birds legs and feet before dipping into and massaging in the Neem oil, but definitely will wash the visibly infected birds’ legs . I think a coat of Vaseline is a good idea atop of the insecticidal Neem oil.

Also, we are going to go to mill tomorrow where we can collect free wood shavings and saw dust... if we go during hours of operation we can likely get dry shavings to improve the current dampish condition of the coop floor , which we neglected on account of a shortage of straw bedding in our region this past year.
Also will build a dust bath for them to use while cooped up over the next few months through our Southern British Columbian winter.

We are brainstorming tonight on what to do to treat our roosts...replacing them might be easiest. Otherwise I like the idea pyrethrum spray.
Lots to do tomorrow!!!!Thank goodness it’s a day off / at home.

Good luck! Keep us posted! I have neem oil, and I hadn't even thought about using it in this capacity, even though I've used it in the garden to get rid of pests. I am very interested to see how it goes.

I treated all birds with a homemade salve of olive oil, beeswax and only 10:/: Neem oil. I did it for three nights before Christmas, took a few days off and repeated nightly for 7 consecutive evenings.
It did the trick....I aimed mostly to smother the bugs and repeated because of eggs and possible roost infestation.

I did not use a stonger percentage of neem oil due to advice in research, however I did put a little full strength on my own skin , and it was not irritated.
As my salve ran lower and I had to add to it, I did increase the amount of neem to about 20:/:
