Leghorn Question for the genetic experts...

Krys,

No. Pearl White is a brand name for commercial egg laying white leghorn produced by McMurray Hatchery. The large hatcheries have their brand name leghorn. Ideal has the 236 and I can not think of any others.

Rebel,

It is not the dominant white gene that is the problem with white leghorns. White leghorns are normally silver and that is a good thing. The problem is that with a red sex linked cross; the white leghorn contains a gene that causes the birds to be black under the white. In order for a red sex linked cross to work the female chicks must be reddish in color. The gene that white leghorns carry causes them to be black under the white and the white dominates so you get white chicks and not red chicks.

The gene that causes a rhode island red to be red is needed in a red sex linked cross. The gene that causes a chick to be red under the white, leaks through the white and you get a red chick.
