I just got some Ideal 236's at the feed store...we of course got them for their reputation of laying but most of flock is very friendly they are our pets... is the any hope with leghorns to be friendly if we hold them as chicks?

Hi. I have a 236 myself. She's 2 years old now & been laying almost every day of it! In my experience, they will probably be skittish to some degree even if you hold them a lot, but not really wild acting. We have a very small flock of 5, & held them all extensively since they were less than a week old. The EE's seemed wild for a while, but as they matured, they've gotten really mellow. They are now 1 yr old. My Black Austrolorp hen is the sweetest, comes to her name & is always very social & will fly up & sit on your lap. The Blue Cochin rooster is so fluffy & sweet! Lets my 5 yr ol girl carry him all over & he's almost as big as she is! Then the 236....well, she will calm down & allow you to hold her once you get ahold of her, but that's the hard part- catching her! She acts like wolves are after her! She has a cute personality though...She's also very loud: "Bok-bok-bok-ba-GOCK!!!" I mean LOUD! And not because of danger. Just because. Her & the rooster do a really loud duet (she's his fave) every morning around 9... I guess for best results, I'd say just try to hold them a lot ( @ least twice a day for a couple minutes each, petting & talking to them) & give them treats often, letting them see you toss it in there so they associate you w/ good stuff! (I break them up into little bitty pieces so that I can give stuff more often, but not take away from their nutrition.) You'll be pleased w/ those eggs though, in any case! Good luck to you!

I have 3. One PW leghorn, one CA W Leghorn and one LB Leghorn.

All skittish but the CA W will let me check under her while she's in the next box without fussing. The other two fly out of there if I get near them.

I'll be rehoming all but the one come the end of May

My leghorn is skittish also and will come out of the nestbox in a heartbeat if you get near her. When I catch her with the net, then hold her,she calms down nicely more so than some of my other breeds of chickens.
