Help please... I was given a few 'hens' but this one turned into a rooster, and I thought he was a 'mutt' until I found this thread. For 2 days I've been comparing all kinds of photos and info... still nothing is certain.
He has a lemony or straw colored hackles and back feathering, and red lobes, but otherwise fits the description.
I have seen evidence of 2 cream legbar owners that have roos with the red lobes throwing blue-egg chicks... so I am hopeful, but there are other strains and even another breed that look so similar that I am stumped!
I've got 6 different breed roosters now -all but one is 1 year old. Hard decision to choose which roo gets to rule the coop (at this time 17 hens and 2 chicks); each roo has pro and con attributes!
My main reason for needing to know the breed is of course blue or colored egg genes, because my only colored egg layer died in an accident, and I have a penchant for the colored eggs, lol, but also have read some of the legbars are aggressive breeders and because of his size (HUGE), I don't want to risk my hens without a good reason (to expect blue egg outcomes from next years' hatches).
I have a gentle blue cochin (4 y/o) but not in best of health, but a proven good roo for the flock. If this roo in question is NOT a legbar, then I'll keep the cochin (until I order a new rooster next spring with chicks).
Thanks in advance!
As a juvenile.
at 1 year - there is a bit of iridescent green mixed with the barred feathers.
