I am trying to set up my coop so that my chickens can be at a comfortable and safe temperature. If their coop temperature falls to 45º at night and raises to 85º in the middle of the day, will they be okay? I was able to find a past thread saying that around 95º is the lethal temperature for chickens.

I have 11 chickens at 8 weeks old in my 8x8 coop which is not very drafty. They are all cold-hearty breeds.

My girls do fine outdoors in their coop year-round. They were adults (4 mo) when I first put them out though, I know the younger ones need more heat. mine are also winter hardy breeds. I was thinking of rigging a cooling system for when it goes about 80-85 because they start panting around that temp.

When the temperatures swing so wildly, it is always dangerous for chickens in such hot weather. Mine have been in heat with temps of over 100F (summer of 2007 we had more than 21 days of consecutive 100F days with it reaching 107F one day with heat index much higher). However they must have plenty of permanent shade, cool water I freeze water in plastic soda/drink bottles and put like blocks of ice in the waters. I also put a fan on them during the hottest days (esp the nest boxes) & even over the roosts at night. In consecutive, scorching days with my adult birds, I have let a water hose trickle making a little stream for them to stand in. Also, I do not disturb them at all during the hottest part of the day (to minimize their moving around). Good Luck!
