I had a barred rock broody who hatched 5 chicks about a week and a half ago, and I just bought 6 americaunas to put under her, and everything went really great for the first 2 days, but now one of the new chicks is just kinda listless and sleepy, not really scratching and I havent' seen it eat today, although it has been drinking and pooing, but it's poo is pretty runny. it doesn't move at all when I pick it up, but when i go to wipe it's little butt of the runny poo, it peeps like mad....

I took it out of the brood and put it in a brood box. it's just kinda sitting there right now... keeps falling asleep standing up, and doesn't seem interested in being a chicken at all...

sooo... I know you guys are better with this than me...

whaddya think?

I would bring it in, put it under a heat lamp, give it some PolyViSol without iron if you can, add some sugar to the water and mash up a boiled egg or yogurt and add some chick start to it to encourage eating.
Watch the chick for signs of coccidiosis(standing in corner with eyes closed and feathers fluffed and bloody poo).
Hopefully the chick just needs a jump start.
Good luck to you and the chick.

awesome! thanks a bunch. I'll get started on that right away... I'm going to see about the sugar water... how much should I put in? i have one of those quart waterers in the brood box with it, so maybe like a teaspoon? or is that too much?

also, what is this PolyViSol of which you speak? is that similar to gatorade, because the name seems to imply that.

any ideas what would cause that? the bowels arent' bloody, so I'm not worried about cocci just yet...

hmmm.... the search continues.

Thanks!

It really may just need a bit of a jump start OR it could be the beginnings of cocci.
I would say about 1/2 tsp for a quart of water-DO watch for pasting, though because the sugar can cause it.
PolyViSol without iron is an infant vitamin that you can get at any drugstore-great to have on hand when you have birds anyway!

okay, so I've purchased some amprolium powder (20%) for this as I have been reading about coccidiosis, and I think this is what's up.

How do I dose this for the little one. I have read about the wet mash, but I can't seem to understand what the dosages are for the 7day treatment in the water, and how much to mix in the feed... any ideas?

Thanks!

Sorry-I don't know about the powder. Wish I could help. Bet the answer can be found on here somewhere.
