Lethargic chicken

Young chickens sometimes can't survive, baby chicks are very sensitive. It feels bad when you loose one of chickens but I guess what must happen - will happen and we can't do anything about it.

For a few days I had a chicken seem mopey, lethargic as you say. I thought she was being over bred by the rooster and the heat was getting to her. She was beautiful and only two years. She laid eggs up until she was found dead in her box. They all had DE in their food and I sprinkle it in their runs and boxes occasionally. She had no visible signs at all of issues. That was two days ago. This morning I went into another house and found one of my pullets -- isolated groups here, 'sleeping' in the feed trough (I use a repurposed gutter for the littles to eat out of). I picked her up and she was very limp and breathing slow. Again, no signs of anything and she was fine lastnight. One of our best looking pullets of her type too. So, I took her inside, put her into a brooder situation with a heat lamp on her, clean shavings under her and have used a syringe to put antibiotic water into her twice. She is a little more alert but not moving around or eating. She is about 12 weeks old. If there is more to be done please let me know. I hate antibiotics but they were 6$ for four days of treatment so I need to try. This breed is a Houdan.
