Help! I have a 1.5 year old production red that is very lethargic. She did not leave the coop today with the other chickens and has been Laying around sleeping. She made no effort to get away from me and sometimes seems confused about where she is going, knocking her beak up against stuff. She has NO appetite, not for treats, scratch or scrambled eggs. She'll take a few sips of water when I make her.
Of course I came here to do some research and found info about a hen being egg bound. I picked her up and her belly does seem swollen and tight. I even picked up one of my other hens to compare and it's a notable difference.
I live in central Texas so I thought maybe the heat but none of my other chickens are having issues and she was fine last year when it was even worse out! I've got her inside in a crate, soaked her in a warm water bath for 20-30 minutes and she didn't even care. Fell asleep sitting in the tub. She will click once in a while but that's all the fuss she makes and that's not normal for her. She had a bunch of poop around her vent and it's been cleaned. I id nott physically feel an egg though which worries me it may be something else.
I don't know how long this has been going in since I returned from vacation yesterday, all was fine 4 days ago. How long do I try to nurse her to health? I'm hoping it's fixable, she's a great hen! Haven't oiled her vent or checked it for an egg, thought I'd wait to see if the bath works.
What else is there!? I need advice!
