We have a camera in our coop and I noticed Tuesday that one of our girls wasn't acting quite right. Tail down, and lazy. She stayed on the roost most of the day. Yesterday after observing her laying in the nesting box for 3+ hours, with no egg, I removed her and placed her in a dog crate with a little food and water, but she is very lethargic (unlike her) and not eating and I witnessed her drink very little. We had an instance of sour crop with another hen about a month ago. My husband was able to "burp" her and force her to regurgitate and she recovered quickly. Not sure if that is what is going on here too, or possibly egg bound? She hasn't pooed much since being in the dog crate. The very little she has done looks like brown clumps of food for lack of a better term with liquidy white. Any ideas? This is Day 3 of this...

Does her crop have anything in it?
I would try giving her a little plain yogurt to see if you can regulate her digestion. Maybe mix with a little wet food or some boiled egg.

It sounds like she could be egg bound.

At this point, making sure she drinks is more important than eating until you figure out what the trouble is.

Hope someone else has ideas.

She is eggbound. Put her in a container of warm water up to her sides and gently massage her underside front to rear while she's soaking for about 20 minutes. The warm water will relax and expand her innards, massaging will encourage her to move the egg along. Then apply olive oil just inside and outside of her vent to help her lay the egg easier. Do this as often as needed.
