M lavendar orpington is sick! I suspect sour crop but would like to rule out something more serious.
This evening when i came to put the chickens up, she was slow to join me in the run. I always being dried bugs down and the chickens anticipate this, waiting at the door and running around my feet. Not only did she not join, but she expressed no interest in the bugs (though she did drink some water). I picked her up to flip her upside down and check her vent, and she vomited up probably 5 ounces of liquid when i did this. Her vent was clear but there is sign of diarrhea.
She seemed normal enough yesterday, this morning when i let the chickens out she was in the coop but I assumed she was laying. We haven’t gotten an egg from her today however.
The rest of the birds seemed normal, and there is no sign of trauma.
I recently had to order replacement food as there was a delay in shipping of my normal food. The girls generally get scratch and peck feed, a mix of pellets and grains. I had to give them a non-organic layer pellet which i mixed with some cracked corn. This is my best guess as to what could be causing the problem.
I researched sour crop and tried to repeat the forced vomiting; I haven’t been successful. Her crop definitely feels a little swollen and there seems to be grit in it.
She is currently in quarantine with us; we have her in a pen with pellet i mixed with warm water to make a mash, a little yogurt, and some water with apple cider vinegar in it. She doesn’t seem too interested in the food or water and is definitely lethargic. While we were prepping her quarantine digs I had her in a box and she produced a very watery yellowish poop which I have included a picture of.
I’m hoping I can treat this at home, but want to rule out salmonella or anything potentially serious. Any advice anyone can offer re: what this might be and how we can deal with it would be wonderful!
