Lethargic/Sick Turkey

Thanks so much for that. Toxicity from the meds for Cocci? Can you explain that for me please?

My turkey this a.m. was nearly dead. Laboured breathing, eyes closed, head tucked back into its self, droppy. I did a gamet of things and it seems better however the two remaining and most healthy are acting somewhere in between nearing death and healthy if that makes sense.

So far today I've ...

Given them sulfer homeopathically, colodial silver and gelsinium. I"ve also given them pedialite and DE. Crazy? Perhaps but I don't like feeling helpless. That one near death this a.m. is so much better I"m hopeful. I will get some sulfa based meds tmo I hope if they can get it in soon enough for me.

How rude of me, I am sorry you lost your turkey in the end. So sad and frustrating. Why can't they just tell us how they feel!

Bummer that they are all sick. I think we separated out our first sick one in good enough time not to have it spread. I read that the coccidiostat can cause paralysis from it having a toxic affect on the turkey. Usually though, that is supposed to go away when you take them off the meds. We never saw improvement after that.

What kind of feces are you seeing?

Thanks so much for that. Those are the exact symptoms they have. I have continued to give colodial silver and sulfer. They seem to be about 70%. I am looking for meds but without a vet visit they won't give me anything for it.

If it's blackhead, you can treat them with metronidazole. It's sold over the counter in pet and also some feed stores in the States (I'm in the UK). You need to dose them 50mg per 1kg (bird weight) morning and evening. It's marketed as a treatment for fish so I think the most common and easiest way of getting hold of it is a brand called "fish zole".

I read recently that blackhead used to be treated with sulphur, that may explain why the sulphur based stuff you gave them showed an improvement. There's also a thread on the go in the turkey forum titled something like "hope this saves a turkey from blackhead", detailing treating blackhead with Cayenne pepper. This didn't cure my birds but it has bought us some time. It's early days for me as I only started them on the metronidazole yesterday but they are showing a large improvement already with some pink pigment returning to their heads (my birds were pretty far along and had all gone very grey in the head - two of them were dark purple).

Good luck with your birds.
