Hi all,

Tonight I came home, and one of my silkies was acting odd. I’m new to chicken keeping, and this is my first instance of possible illness.

Here’s the info:
1) What type of bird , age and weight : Silkie chicken, ~5.5months. Not sure if weight

2) What is the behavior, exactly : Lethargic, acting odd and not moving around much, does not want treats. She’s not exactly breathing heavily, but sort of sighing.

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? : I just noticed when I got home from work - she seemed fine this morning

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? : Not that I can tell.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. : No

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. : She hasn’t laid eggs in a few days, but since we’re getting short days I hadn’t thought much of that.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. : Hard to say since I just saw this issue. She hasn’t since I noticed it.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. : She has not pooped since I noticed this issue

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? : I tried giving her a warm water bath in case she is egg bound. I gave her a bit of nutridrench, and I’m going to lubricate her vent in case she is egg bound.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? : Not sure. It’s nighttime, and I don’t think I have an emergency vet that treats chickens nearby.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use : Sand in the henhouse, nesting pads in the lay box, and dirt/sanicare in the run.

Any ideas? It’s hard to tell if she’s actually really lethargic, or just really nervous being in the house (she’s a nervous chicken overall).

I would try giving her some B12 and see if that perks her up. Is her crop empty? If not, it could be sour crop. Either way, a little B12 never hurts.

Her crop is full - not rock hard, not exactly squishy. It’s palpable, and she doesn’t seem distressed by my touching it.

I’ll try that! Exactly, can’t hurt :)

Check her crop in the evening, it should be full. Check in the morning, it should be empty. Does her breath smell?

Possible egg bound, from my notes ....
Egg Bound - warm soak in Epsom Salt, Tums smashsed & keep in dark room, humidity, feel for egg w/ glove.

The good news is that she did poop a little - whitish liquid. I have her in my bathtub currently. I gave her a crushed up tums (in case of her being egg bound), and a small dish of water. If she’s not better in the morning I’ll take her to my vet.

Re-check her crop first thing in the morning before she's had anything to eat/drink.

Photos of her and her poo may be helpful.

I agree, getting the Calcium into her is a good idea.
You gave PND which is good. Direct oral dose is 1cc per 3 pounds of weight. I'd work on hydration and see how it goes.

If you are seeing the vet tomorrow, then ask them to run a fecal float to help rule out worms and coccidiosis too.

Thanks so much for your advice!

Luckily it seems like I was stressed for nothing - Violet (the chicken) appears perfectly fine. Not sure what happened, if she was a little constipated or something. Either way the little thing had me super worried. My birds are more pets than anything, so I was stressed.

I’ve attached a picture of my pretty girl. Thanks again all!
