We all enjoy our birds, but honestly sometimes I wonder about them. Last spring, began the wettest year I can remember . My 4 yr old Narr. hen went broody, so feeling some sympathy I gave in and let her set. Well, she picked the lowest spot in the pen and refused all attempts to move the nest to higher ground. So, I shoveled a mound of sand in the corner and put her eggs on top with some good nesting material. She took to it immediately and then the rains came.
I leaned a 4x4 sheet of plywood over her to give some resemblance of shelter and hoped for the best. What a trooper! For an entire month of relentless rain, wind and cold, she held fast. There was, at times, 3 inches of standing water around her nest mound, and her appearance took the form of an old wrung out mop head. I thought ,what a waste of 12 eggs, and felt bad she would do all those hours on the nest for naught. On the 28th day, she greated me with 8 fluffy poults!
Never under those conditions did I think she would be successful.
We should all be as determined!
So, let's hear your hen story. Weird nesting locations, funny stuff, etc.
