Letting shipped eggs "settle"?

I see this advice everywhere: let shipped eggs settle 12-24 hours before placing in the incubator. Although I can (kind of) understand the reasoning behind it, I also hate the idea of letting the eggs sit around aging for those extra hours -- and wonder why they can't do their settling while they warm up. Does anyone know if there's any real evidence that letting the eggs sit really makes a difference in hatch rate?

Thanks to all who run this site, btw. I can't tell how many times I've typed a question into google and been directed here.

I don't know if there is any real proof out there it works and I definitely understand your dilemna. I generally take them out of the box a.s.a.p. and set them out for no more than six hours, but don't wait 12 to 24. Shipped eggs can be a hit and miss, but I have had 24 out of 25 fertile eggs (30 eggs total) hatch doing it the way that I do.

Thanks! I was just looking at one of your auctions on ebay last night. I ended up ordering BCMs and Ameraucanas from a couple of different sellers, but might have to bite on one of your mixed lots sometime soon.

I've been setting mine pretty quickly after I get them, but I'm still pretty new to this and am trying to iron out my goof-ups.

It is definitely a learning curve. I hope your next hatches do well.
