my 4 red hens have lice, came from a frizzle i took in. Im going home to wash them the way it says to online, and im getting the DIATOMACEOUS EARTH stuff to putt through out small coop. Do you think it will take care of it? makes me itchy thinking about it!

this is what im getting from TSC, people also use on dogs for fleas, ect. would like to use on my dog as i dont like using chemicals on him. and i read VERY good responds on this.

Hello & welcome,
DE will help. however, I think you should use insecticide powder at least once. What I do is dust 1 week with insecticidal and the following with DE. I alternate for 5-6 weeks, or until the lice are gone from the bird. You can use DE liberally over the coop, roosts etc. pay special attention to all the nooks & crannies, enjoy!

If you get chicken lice on you, you can put DE on yourself too.

injectable ivomectin orally. 5-7 drops for a full size bird and 3-5 for a bantam. no lice or mites or worms.

You give the drops orally, but this apparently does not kill lice, only mites. I use seven (poultry dust). at night when they cant see and you can just pick them up and have your way with them.

Ok bathing them isn't working out. So if I buy that earth stuff, can I put it on them and through coop to rid of them?

Or should I get injectinle ivermectin and hive orally combined with earth stuff in coop???

Ivermectin is only effective against mites, not lice. Chicken lice do not bite and suck blood like cattle lice. Also, ivermectin is ineffective as a wormer due to its overuse in poultry as a miteacide.
Purchase sevin dust and dust your birds, dust inside the coop and nests. Repeat dusting in 7-10 days.

Ugh. I'm getting discouraged.. I went out and looked at them again. If I can't get rid of it should I cull them and start over?
