I was given this lady two weeks ago. I'm new to chickens. I started giving her vitamin e and b when she started with the wry neck. Then I noticed she has bugs and a big mass on her back. She has now picked the mass open. I will be treating her with elector psp as soon as it arrives in the mail. She eats and drinks when she isn't disoriented. Is there something else I need to worry about with her? What is going on?

Welcome To BYC

I'd continue to give her 400IU Vitamin E and 1/4tablet B-Complex daily along with a little egg for the uptake of E.

It's hard to tell her age, so I'd feed her a quality Chick Starter or an All Flock feed. If she's laying eggs, provide oyster shell for her free choice. It's a good idea to provide Grit (Crushed Granite) free choice as well.

It's hard to tell anything about the mass that is on her back. Could you tell if it was a feather cyst, tumor or some type of injury?

The bloody mass needs to be cleaned well. You can use Saline, Chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) or Povidone Iodine. Trim feathers away from the wound/bloody mass so you can see if better (take some more photos once cleaned and trimmed). Apply triple antibiotic ointment to the mass. If she's picking at it, put an infant T-Shirt on her to keep her from picking at it.

If she's heavily infested with mites/lice, you can use a Permethrin based poultry dust to dust her all over to help get those under control. Most stores like TSC carries this year round. Put the dust in a sock and use it like a powder puff to dust her all over.

Mites, especially can suck the life out of a bird, so hopefully the vitamins and good nutrition will help.

I was told she is right at egg laying age, so maybe 20 weeks. The elector PSP came in the mail today, so I will be treating her with that. I have cats who go outside, so I'm hesitant to use permethrin. I will be sure to clean the wound. The mass on her back is about 3 in side to side, and 3 in top to bottom. It is very hard. I can see where the feathers were, or are trying to come back through. Could mites cause that much of a scab? I will continue feeding the vitamins.

I don't know if mites would cause that much of a scab. I'd lean toward injury or something else happening there.

Hopefully she'll heal up o.k. I'm sure she'll feel better with the mites gone.

Got my lady and her friends dunked in elector PSP today. I got a lot of lice off of her. Got my lady cleaned and treated with iodine with a cute little shirt to keep her from picking. The mass has now separated from her body. Nobody knows what's going on.

Is vet care an option?

If not, I'd keep that cleaned as needed and keep the wound coated with triple antibiotic ointment. As it heals the scabs may start to separate off, exposing new skin and finally new feathers emerging. It can take time for this to happen.

Vet care is not an option. Update. After treatment, we are slowly getting better. She won't keep her shirt on anymore, but she hasn't been picking. Thank you for your guidance!
