We have had great luck with simply flooding the chicken area with light from dusk to dawn.

We live in a heavily wooded area and have other defenses too, but we have seen no signs of any predators even attempting to break in.

Am I naive/lucky or does the light really help?

Very lucky! I have a big halogen street type light that floods my whole chicken yard at night and it never detered any racoon or possum, just made it easier to see their prey. Also made it easier for me to see where to shoot though!

Had my old pet cat killed and dismembered under my porch light a few weeks ago, so lights definitely do not repel any predators at my place.

nope, they get used to it just like they would a radio playing

I have 7 twelve week old who have been in a pen alone since their mother weaned them at 8 weeks old. I have a motion sensor with a flood light that seems to have worked well with keeping them safe. A cat, opossum or any small animal is enough to cause it to come on. I figured they would also be able to see to get out of the way. I also use those blinking red nite guard lights around my perimeter.
