I had my first hatch today. Father is a light Brahma. Mom is a BLR Wyandotte splash but more light gray looking than white. This is what the baby looks like. I was expecting more of a light Brahma look but it’s so dark. Any idea what it will look like as an adult? Also can this cross combination be wing sexed?

No.
Unless you know that the father was fast-feathering AND the mother was slow feathering: that's the only way the sexlink wing-sexing can work.

It will have some kind of pattern in blue (not black or splash), on a background of white/silver (not red/gold). If a male, it might have some red showing in the shoulder area. I think the pattern will be a messy form of single lacing (like Mom's but not as nice), but I'm not positive about that.

The chick will have a walnut comb (genetically, pea comb from the Brahma father plus rose comb from the Wyandotte mother makes a walnut comb.)

Wyandottes usually have larger wattles than Brahmas; the chick will probably have Wyandotte-sized wattles.

The chick will probably have some feathers on the feet, but not as many as the Brahma father has.

Thank you for the thorough breakdown. I don’t understand the genetics as much as I would like. It just confuses me. It does appear to be bluish and not black. Do you care to help me with this one as well? 8CCD3914-7321-4C18-8299-420349A11BB9.jpeg E92EC48C-A55E-4095-9055-9270AB6B336B.jpeg 576C21B1-FF86-4CC2-A49E-105C61106852.jpeg
Same Light Brahma father. Mother is a silver spangled Appenzellers Spitzhauben. Again I was surprised at how dark it is and even how dark the feet are. I can see some blue coming from the splash Wyandotte but both parents of this one are nearly all white. 8E175231-46EA-4403-8CCC-9700E6E31837.jpeg This is the mom.

There are some genes that have more effect on the color of a chick's down than they do on the adult feathers--I think that's why your chicks are so dark.

Same Light Brahma father. Mother is a silver spangled Appenzellers Spitzhauben. Again I was surprised at how dark it is and even how dark the feet are. I can see some blue coming from the splash Wyandotte but both parents of this one are nearly all white.

Chick will grow up silver with black markings. The markings may look like lacing, or like spangling--I don't know which.

Feet will have some feathers.

The Brahma father had yellow legs, right? I would have expected all his chicks to have light-colored legs, but clearly this one doesn't!

Head will have a crest, probably a small one. I do not know whether the crest will stick up (like the Spitzhauben mother's), or if it will lay backward (like a Cream Legbar's does.)

Comb: I do not know what it will look like when it grows up.

I would be VERY interested in seeing photos of this chick as it grow up. I have considered making almost exactly this cross myself, and have looked up what to expect: but the online genetics pages were not helpful. Apparently, no-one has bothered to write up or photograph what happens when you cross chickens with these particular comb types and feather colors. So I'm really eager to see yours as it grows!

(I find genetics fascinating, but they can also be frustrating. People figure it out by crossing breeds and paying attention to what offspring are produced, but certain crosses just haven't been done--or at least, not written about in places that I would find them.)

Thank you once again. I’ve seen some comb crosses like this but I am not sure what the technical name would be. So far the comb is too small to figure out what it will be.

Two more of the Wyandotte mixes hatched and both of them have more of the light Brahma coloring I was expecting. I’m so curious to see what all these mixes look like as they develop.

I know this is an old thread, but do you have any current pics of these birds?
Yes, I do. Or can get some new photos tomorrow if I can’t find any already on my phone. My spitz/Brahma cross hatched some babies recently so I have some pics of her with the chicks but she looks a little rough after sitting for 3+ weeks (I didn’t let her keep eggs until I knew she was serious about sitting.) She’s a good mama. I have two light Brahma/Wyandotte crosses. One is currently sitting on some eggs. I’ll have to look through my pictures some and I’ll post their updates.
