I need to build a brooder. I have read in chickens for dummies that the proper height for the heat lamp is 12" +/-. I would like to build a brooder that is at least 18" deep. I also would like to have a fenced top on it because I have little children who will be tempted to touch chicks while I am at work. I was planning on putting a locking lid on the top and then putting the lamp above the lid... I guess my question is how other people have handled light placement, and how crucial the 12" rule is. The chicks will be in a 50-60 degree basement. Also, what Watt bulb might you all recommend?

Newb says thanks,
Steve

I hang the light above the brooder and adjust the height as needed, to get the temperature I am looking for. Each week, to reduce the temperature by 5 degrees, I hang it a little higher.

If you want to keep the light in the same position all the time, you could wire something together for it. Some people have used dimmer switches or rheostats.

Thanks.
Dimmer switch is the plan. Can you tell me what WATT bulb you might recommend for a basement (50-60 degree room temp) at a distance of about 20"??? (with dimmer)
Thanks,
Steve
