We just set up our brooder in an unused bathtub (long story short, it's a tiny bathtub - only 4 1/2 ft long - and we don't use it). I've got a heat lamp for our chicks, but do they need a light ource during the day too, or is the heat lamp enought light?

A light source during the day will help them with a day/ night schedule. I brood my chicks in a room that faces west and my neighbors house. So it gets little to no sun. But I have plant lights in there that simulate the sun. I know for my chicks they are more active when I have my plant lights on than when they’re off. Even when the lights turn off during the day the chicks are less active. So I think some other light source would be beneficial.
