I have 3 americaunas that are 4/5 weeks mostly feathered out and 3 wellsummers that are 4 weeks almost feathered out, I accidently broke the red light and only have a white light.......can I leave them with no light. The white light seems much harsher than the red one, Im afraid they might start picking at the littler chicks?????????? Thanks for your input...Bird Lady

I took the red heat lamp off mine deliberately when they were nicely feathered, just a little bit of down left on their heads - about 4 weeks. I was amazed at how quickly they learned to settle down at night, no eating all night and no noise, and they had no trouble at all learning that day is day and night is GOODNIGHT!

Then after a day or two I started cracking the window in the room they were in during the daytime. By the time I put them out in the coop at 5.5 weeks they adjusted almost immediately! When I put them out our temps were in the 20's at night. Light first night, moved the light to a better spot, light second night, and when I checked on them they were snuggled down together - in the corner opposite the light. It came out. A couple of days later it snowed...and it snowed several more times. I think your little ones will be just fine...maybe a little confused the first night but that passes quickly.

Thank you, they did fine last night with white light that I raised and covered part of box, however they are by a french door with natural light during the day so I thought Id start turning out light. I put them out in a tractor for part of day for last several days and they love it. So as usual I worry for naught! lol Have a great weekend and enjoy your chickens :)

Thank you, Bird Lady! I hope you get as much joy from yours as I do! Be safe if you have plans for the weekend!

I raised mine with white light. They were fine and are still fine. They are now 20 weeks young.
