Limping emu

Hi guys. I found my 3 year old Stuart down this morning. When he stood he was limping. I moved him into a pen with Chica who is the shy girl and less likely to chase him like Loca does. This is what his leg looks like but I think he just pooped on it while he was down.



Other than the limp he looks fine.



Here's a little video. I would appreciate any advice.

Lovely video, from what I can think of, he may have been raced by his mate, thern was tired, when you saw him down...after a race, they pant like mad lol...usually only once a day lol just to get their legs excersized.
Looks Steward has recovered from his limp... at least he stands on both feet.. and walks quite good...but notice on video, he is a bit worried about his mate.. one way...it makes him move . lol ..but hope he is not pestered too much..

It looks like the back of the right foot is swollen, maybe he has something stuck in it or cut it...just a thought.

Perhaps puddling in some water, may help to soften skin , mine love mud tracks lol after rain...but most are now flagged or graveled where they hang out, nearest to me of course..

he may just have sprained it or has something stuck in it , my emu's love for me to hose them down , and it is a great way to see if anything is wrong with them good luck keep us updated please .

Stuart is much better since yesterday. He still lays down a bit but is up walking most of the day with hardly any limp at all. I haven't tried hosing him down because there is no factor in that pasture. If it gets worse I'll move him. So far it is going well with him being in the pasture with Chica. She has been by herself because she was constantly being chased and kicked by the other female and the boys. I tired putting each of the boys in with her and she freaked out and fell under a fence into a small enclosed space between her pasture and the chicken run. So far though she seems to be tolerating having him in there. Loca and Louis are much calmer since it's just the two of them in the adjoining pasture. Maybe we'll get some babies after all.

Glad Stewart is on the mend and doing well, main thing , he is eating and move about and feels safe whit his mate.

I had also one girl, Jasmine, didn't like her half sister Cindy and pecked and chased her. So Cindy is on her own in next paddock and gets lot more attention from me and is very happy.
Jasmine even pecked her new boy 1 year older, at beginning, she seems to have a jealous streak lol.
She hatched 3 days before the rest and got all my attention 1st 3 days..call it spoilt brat ? they never forget...treating me the other sister, always wants cuddles. lol and laid 25 from Christmas Day on, much to my surprise, she was barley 19 months old.

I have a question ? have you noticed a lot of feathers on the ground where the bird was , I had an emu who was attacked by something at night and there wasn't anything I could see and I originally thought that one of the other emu had done it but, After a couple of times of the attack happening he jumped out of the pen to get away from the attacker and the feathers being torn out continued all over the yard , what ever was after him only got feathers and he was waiting for me to put him up the next morning with a sprained muscle in the leg . after I put an electric fence around the bottom outside of the pen ,I never had any more problems , his leg healed, However my vet said that when they get stressed they tend to have leg problems ,So glad to hear it is doing so much better .

A Lady was selling her emu girl, as boy died...me asking how and why ?
This was her response.

I have been really upset about loosing my boy. I went up in the morning to feed them as usual and found only the female in their paddock. I thought he must have got out and searched the corn field for him, but found him lying in the next paddock by the fence. He was off his feet and had a huge graze on his hip bone, most worrying he had blood coming from his mouth which suggested internal injury. We made him as comfortable as we could but late afternoon he passed away. I don't suppose we will know for .

My my theory is that the fox which has been pestering our chickens lately entered there paddock and that my emu has gone to chase the fox, jumped the 6ft fence injuring his legs and then collapsed and couldnt get back up. I dont know about your emus but mine hate foxes and unfamiliar dogs.. etc.

we have a lot of different wild critters , we have bob cats, coyotes , foxes, bears and the occasional stray critter we never see but my emu are in a 6 ft fence 2x4 welded wire to keep them from getting there leg caught in the bigger wire and electric fence around the outside bottom of there fence , they have buildings built with 5 rooms that have 2 doorways so they can't get trapped but other emu or anything that might get in and street lights all around the perimeter of the fence and light inside the rooms to there building I use red lights to keep the arguing down then when the weather is cold they get heat lights in every room and they know how to lie under them
