I have collected my litter in a compost pile. Can I put it into regular compost piles ,that may not get hot enough to kill the ecoli? I guess it could go around non fruit bearing bushes and shrubs ,though I would like to incorporate it into my main compost piles. Is this really a viable concern or am I overthinking this ?

Overthinking. Even if it you "slow" compost it shouldn't be a problem. DO compost it before putting it on plants. The high nitrogen content can burn. The stuff really is like black gold once it's fully composted.

Well maybe. You should wash anything out of your garden before you eat it anyway, there are things present in ordinary garden soil that can make you sick as well as the e. coli and salmonella found in chicken litter. I agree with the slow composting suggestion. If you want to use your compost more regularly than once a year, you need to be diligent about monitoring the temperature of the pile and turning it often. I use chicken manure compost exclusively in my garden. I absolutely love the stuff.

Once it's fully composted it won't resemble the litter you pulled out of the coop anymore. You can let is rest for a few months more if you're still concerned about disease. I usually apply everything I have accumulated in my pile to the garden in the fall after the summer vegis are spent. Then dig it in before I plant in the spring. I try to turn the pile once a month. If you turn it often and make sure it stays moist it will break down faster.

There are many good books on making beautiful compost, it's as much an art as a science for a gardener.
