Bonjour,

I’ve noticed over the last week that my 2 week old chicks seem to have a small cough? It’s a quiet little “ka” sound, and I had never noticed it before. They all seem well.. some have diarrhea but I think that might be stress induced when I let them out for a flap. It alternates with normal stools so I’m thinking they are alright in that regard. I’m working on reducing the stress. They seem to appreciated the slower and more calm approach. Anyway. Just wondering if they start clearing their airways at this age or something else developmental that might explain the “ka”. No lethargy, frequent fresh water changes and bedding changes. Sitting at 78-83 degrees. Thanks

Good air exchange is important for chicks, as well as a clean dry brooder. Pictures of your brooder may help. Stress shouldn't cause respiratory problems. I cannot recall any vocalizations that sound like a ka. They could perhaps be sneezing?

Hi there. I do feel it’s a cough or sneeze or something like that. I was saying stress may have caused the diarrhea, not resp problems. But yes air flow... good point. I have had the fan on in my room lately for that, and an air purifier. Here is a photo.

They are ready for a bigger area. If they are acting fine I wouldn't worry too much. Getting them somewhere bigger and more open would be a good idea at their age.
