I just wanted to post this in case anyone else might need to know. I just lost my maltipoo (11lbs). Ive been free ranging my chickens and leaving the gate open. She got into the chicken feed and filled up on it. The x-ray showed a swollen belly, but it was indestinguishable what was inside it. The swollen belly was so big it cut off circulation up the back veins. She had a birth defect that had made her valve at the bottom of her stomach too small to pass the feed through it. From the time she showed signs of being sick, to being at the vet she went from weak wobbly legs to unable to stand and incoherant. This was about an hour. She didnt make it. After she was gone, the vet did an autopsy to see what caused this. Thats how we know.
It didnt occour to me a well fed pup would eat a whole belly full of scratch.
I just thought it might be worth posting in case someone with small dogs might need to keep an eye on them not getting into the feed. I feel so horrible and guilty, I hope that someone can learn from my mistake.
