It's been a few weeks so I thought i'd update on our little flock of chickens. Toothless fully recovered from his dog attack after almost 6 weeks of tlc. He was already a sweet boy before but now he's even sweeter. As long as its on his terms he'll now sit in your lap which I love and he's a goofball. He get the "zoomies" several times a day and runs around like a idiot for a few minutes and where he's so big he looks ridiculous. I've laughed at him several times and i swear he'll stop and just give you a look that clearly states "what are you laughing at". Momma chickens babies are 10 weeks old tomorrow and she did a wonderful job raising them. Sadly only 1 of the 4 is a little pullet so I have to rehome 3 of them. Thankfully this time mine and my daughter's favorite is the pullet. The biggest change is 2 weeks ago we rehomed their father Tuffnut. He was beautiful and very friendly to people, BUT, he almost killed Toothless. If we hadn't been home he would have. I knew this was coming ever since we realized we had 2 Roo's in the first clutch we let momma hatch. I wanted to rehome him sooner as he had a home to go to, but my daughter begged me to let her try to keep both and that maybe with enough space they wouldn't fight. She was here when the fight broke out, and saw that Tuff started it and intended to finish it. It was a hard lessen learned, but one she needed to learn. She now knows and understands that as long as she has Toothless, we can not keep anymore roosters. Toothless is her baby, and he's not going anywhere. Tuff went to her buddie's and now has 3 of his own personal hens and she can visit him on the weekends. Now that he is gone Toothless has also changed, he's visibly relaxed and now struts around proud and tall. The other hen from the first clutch who was previously named "hiccup" is now named Henrietta. Hiccup was a cute name but not for a hen. With Tuff gone she has finally realized where home is after the barn move and stays here 24/7. He was so territorial that he would only let her stay for a hour or so then herd her either on the hill behind the house or back down to the old barn. The new pullet we are keeping is called Nugget. she is adorable and when she feathered out she almost has a mohawk on the back of her head which i hope she keeps.

Here is one of the last pictures i took of the chicks daddy Tuffnut before he left. and some of Nuggets brothers i took yesterday. 1 of them is already trying to crow, and he sounds pitiful. I thought it couldn't get works then the strangled cry's his daddy and toothless made learning. I was wrong.

Tuffnut appears to have a high percentage of gamefowl DNA. It is unlikely that he will ever tolerate a second cockerel/rooster in the flock. Both he and Toothless are beauties.

He was a gamefowl, whether accidentally or on purpose, when my daughters best friend's dad delivered the eggs for momma hen to hatch last spring, a few game eggs got mixed in. I only wanted eggs from big stock chickens because i didn't want to deal with aggressive chickens. I gave Tuff back to him, he raises them and has several breeding pairs and trio's. He informed me in our area game chickens is where the money is at if your raising chickens but i really dont care. Momma is a game chicken, and while she is a wonderful fiercely protective mother, she is not the nicest of hens. Her daughter Nugget is somewhat friendlier then she is so far, but i dont see her being a lap chicken either, but i am happy to have a actual daughter of hers. Momma is a survivor. She lived feral for over a year, survived a hawk attack and dog attack that left her with missing toes on one foot and a permanent bald spot on the back of her head. Hopefully Nugget inherited just some of that grit. But, these are my daughter's chickens. She is 11 and all the time has friends over and they hang out in the back yard with them. I need friendly and personable chickens. That is why i'm trying to rehome the 3 young cockerels, i've had enough rooster drama.
