3 years ago I got a call from my aunt. She was a chicken owner for many years and was my inspiration for getting chickens. We went up to her house and right in the entrance there was a box with a light pointed in it. We looked in the box and there were a bunch of little yellow fuzz balls in it!
Now I should explain. Back then one of our neighbors had a fire in their house. They were going to move somewhere else. So my grandpa bought their house, intending to fix it up. With it came a field with a disused chicken coop. My dad and fixed it up and my aunt interpreted that as if we wanted chickens. So now we are stuck with 15 chicks we weren't exactly ready for. I took it upon myself to read as much as I could about chickens. The chicks were Buff Orpingtons, which I learned that they were some of the best chickens.
We had 8 roosters and 7 hens, so after getting rid of all the roosters my dad decided to get another Buff Orpington rooster. He got one from one of his friends and we decided to name him Little Jerry (after that one Seinfeld episode). At first he was really shy, but once he started crowing he gained some self esteem. In fact, he started turning aggressive. I was so scared of him that I wouldn't go in the yard. One day he attacked my dad and he happened to have a snow shovel with him. So my dad whacked him with it and at first he thought that he killed him. Then he got up and ran away. He has never bothered us since.
So after having only 7 chickens (no, I can't have enough) I decide to get 20 more. When they grew up I hatched some eggs from them and the Buff Orpingtons. I got 5 Buff Orpingtons from the hatch and 10 mixed chicks. Only one of the buffs was a hen. After doing another hatch recently I got two chicks from my favorite Easter Egger named Fluff and Little Jerry. Unfortunately one of them was killed by an opossum. The one that's left is a little buff hen with muffs.
When I introduced my roosters back together there was a big fight. Puff, who was part Lakenvelder and part Easter Egger, assumed the top of the pecking order. Little Jerry was previously at the top. Evidently he was so depressed that he separated himself from the other chickens and flew over the fence. He stayed with our billy goat William, who was also by himself at that time. We called them the Lonely Boys.
I got rid of Puff because I had too many roosters, and Little Jerry became top dog again. Here are a few pictures of Little Jerry:
