So our family has jumped into chickens! With all that is going on in the world, I have felt lead (compelled) by God to take care of my family independent from Wal-mart...so here goes.
Tonight we bought 6 hens about 9 weeks old (pouletts?) - 3 are RIRs, 2 are a mix of RIR and Barred Rock we think, i'm not familiar with, and one is a Red Star....I'm sure I will figure it all out shortly (yea right).
We homeschool and have a large family, so this is the beginning of a family farm. My oldest is the accountant - the two middle girls will keep tabs on the chicks daily, feed water, care, and log it all. And my boys will do all the heavy work with dad (building a new coop and run, composting, and prepping for a garden.
My girls will be posting on here, asking questions and trying to learn as much as possible, because this isn't a dad project, but a family project. We will post photos and keep updated on our progress.
As of right now our plan is to get the coop done by 1 Feb - and get 15 more chicks in late Feb for laying hens and some for meat.
Wish us luck!
God Bless!
