21 days ago I put 12 eggs under Little Mama (She was my first pullet in my chicken addiction to lay an egg on 11-15-08). She also was the first to turn broody about 4 weeks ago and that is when I decided to give her an award for that egg back in November. Last night around 6PM CST her babies started hatching. It has been a slow hatch so far however 5 are dry and fluffy and 1 is wet with some of the shell close. I probably should have moved them a few days ago however I was afraid that I would mess things up. She knows more about what is going on than I so I decided to let her do her thing. I've got the brooder set up and ready for her and the little fuzzballs. The other 9 hens and rooster so far have been pretty cool about what is going on in the coop. I got up at 4:30 this morning to make sure that everything was still OK. She had 3 fluffy dry at 4:30. I wish I had a camera to share. It is pretty cool watching her cup her wings so that the little ones can come out to take a peek. I am so glad that I chose Buff Orps for their calm disposition. She lets me look under her and rubb her with chicks. Hopefully the other six eggs will hatch in the next few hours so that they can go to their new home in the shed. I may try to get my daughter to show me how to use her digital camera when she gets home so that I can share pictures. Also I wanted to thank everyone who contributes to this site. It has helped me greatly since my Brown Egg Project started almost a year ago.

YAY!!! Go Little Mama! My bantam cochin's eggs are hatching too - 5 out of 7 so far. It's so much fun, isn't it. Congrats on the new babies!

Can't wait to see your pics...

Are those pure buff orp chicks? The one looking toward the camera looks like it has a fluffy face. They're darling!

And pretty good pic for your first try... now you need a camera of your own, so you can keep a photo diary of your babies' lives!
