Well, this morning I found a coon in the trap.

Couple days ago coon got into cracked corn. Yep it was in a covered barrel. Smart thing some how got the top off. So I set live trap with cat food.
Now the problem is that my bil has been feeding the d-- thing. trying to make it a pet. Only thing I could come up with- I trap it and give it to him one time only. His to do with as he wants.

Next time I'll do whats needed. Any other suggestions.

Wild racoons can carry rabies and show no symptoms. A scratch or bite will result in the coon being killed and its brain tested for the rabies virus. If the coon tests positive your bil will have to have a series of rabies innoculations. Iv'e known several people who have fed wild racoons and ended up with a yard full of them. If you are late feeding or try to stop because you have been overrun with coons, they can be very destructive. Get rid of the coon one way or another.

Bil had a runin with coon when he was 17. had to do the rabies shot thing then, guess he's not the fasted learning person.
Update- bil just released coon. Next time there wiil be one lees coon.

Yes, coons are opportunistic omnivores they eat anything, easier the better... traced chickens are easy - especially with human like hands.

They are Procyonidae the New World Omnivores with banded tails and marked faces (except one case).

Coon will grab chicks AND full blown adult chickens and run with them. They will even grab guineas and kill them. I have caught one in the act before of grabbing a guinea and trying to run with it, I intervened... Though I wasn't able to get a clear shot at it in the dark.. it got away. Chickens and guineas kept coming up missing... that was late last year. This year, I heard the chicks fussing at about 11PM in their brooder pen on the porch... took a look, and a coon was ON the pen putting its hands THROUGH the wire grabbing at chicks, mortally wounding one. So... I quietly grabbed the shot gun, burst out the front door and fired as it was about to scoot off the porch... it flew off instead. Ever since then, no more mysterious chick or chicken disappearances. I guess it was only one that had learned the habit, and looked to be the same one from late last year...
Before then, I had tried live traps .. only trapped opossums, which I relocated as they too will chick rob or even grab a docile hen (seen it done).

OMG, I am dying laughing at you saying it flew off the porch....you are right. opossums are horrible also. I am surprised more ppl. on here aren't talking about them because they are very sneaky, and dangerous to the chickens.

UltraMegaChicken...or UMC (even your name sounds tough) Your comment cracked me up! I was like, YES!!! Then I looked at your avatar and see what a bad 1-19-19 you are. What's a fella to do here in the city? We have air soft.... don't imagine I'll get as much "lift" as you did.

Last year, I built a fountain. Decided, a $3 koy might be kinda cool. Not even 6 hours later, I came home and had not 1, but 3 coons on top of my fountain, hands and heads feelin around. Coons 1- Koy 0 I really don't want that to happen to the peeps I bought today...
