Lockdown in pa- hova bator ?????s

I kept mine on their sides, as long as the fat end of the egg (where the air pocket is located) is clear it should be fine. Putting them in a egg carton just prevents the eggs from rolling around I think. Good luck anyway!

I think the egg carton method is sometimes recommended for eggs with abnormal air cells (saddle, etc.). This thread has more info.

Even with shipped eggs, I put them in the hatcher at lockdown on their sides. Did you notice any problem air cells with yours?
Not that I know of... but the barnevelder eggs are so hard to tell!!! Much like my marans

Now I’m second guessing myself... I locked down but I’m wondering f I should just lay them all in their sides

Good Morning,
I see your very concerned that your not making the right decision but please don't second guess yourself. There are actually study's showing that egg position does not effect the outcome of the hatch. We all have that anxiety when we are new to hatching it's normal. But there are also people that always continue to have anxiety because they just want to do a good job! Here is a study that I hope will help ease your mind, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/21934018/

The reason or maybe the reason the breeder suggested the egg cartons was either 1- he/she had good hatch rates with this method or 2- these are shipped eggs. But there are people out there that find chicks hatch better when the eggs are in a stable environment like the egg carton where the egg can't move. Which gives new baby chickie more power to work on spinning and zipping.
* Did you candle your eggs? As in mark the air cells with a pencil on certain days
* Did you find when candling the eggs there was still moveable air cells? (Do they look like they are loose in the eggs) this would be the common reason to use egg cartons usually happens because of shipping/rough handling

I have hatched eggs upright and chicks hatched just fine.

They will hatch just fine either way, vertical or horizontal. Personally, I hatch all mine in the vertical position.
Sometimes when the chick pips and it's facing down the fluids can block the pip and the chick suffocates or drowns, I have had that happen when I hatched them in the horizontal position. I've also noticed I have fewer malpositioned chicks when hatching in the vertical position. Just my

Do you use a cut down egg carton? If so do you have a photo?
