Hi! I'm new here at BYC and I have a questions about guineas. We moved out to the country about a year ago, and about 2 months ago we bought our 5 year old daughter 4 guineas. Sadly, the raccoons now have us down to one: a lavender hen named Frankie. We are in the process of trying to get more, but in the meantime Frankie is starting to think she is human. We keep her in a cage in the garage at night and during the day I move it outside so she can peck the grass and snack on bugs. If we are out there, I let her out and she follows us around, sits on the porch swing with us, lets us pet her, and comes when we whistle. This is all fantastic, but I'm wondering if she'll ever start acting like a guinea. She rarely flies and I'm not sure she knows she can roost in trees at night. I'm worried about leaving her outside if we aren't out there, (we live next to a busy road) and definitely don't know when or if I should leave her out overnight. Will getting new guineas help her out? Our hope is that maybe she'll sort of teach them to stay in the yard, verse them teaching her to wander all around creation. Are we crazy to think such a thing? I love her, but we travel a lot so I wasn't really wanting a bird we had to have someone look after if we leave town for the weekend!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I'm afraid I have no experience with guineas barring the 2 free range ones we have down at the farm where I keep the horse. Please do drop by the guinea section for all the help from the guinea keepers. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/45/guinea-fowl

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

I think she has gotten a good taste of being a pet . Whether she is or not, she shouldn't be left outside at night or she will be the next snack for a predator. She should be locked in a safe area so predators cannot reach in to hurt her through cage bars, etc.
