Supposed to do the newbie introduction, so here goes.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Super Noob! I mean, we had chickens once on the farm growing up but that was so long ago it doesn't really count. I have wanted chickens for all of my adult life. All of it. We literally lived 50 ft from the city/urban growth boundary. I was on the urban grown side and couldn't have a chicken feather, but the city side could have 5. That was just cruel. Anyway, I just got chickens a couple of days ago. Oh man.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now I have eight 3wk old chicks, two 4mth old cockerels (they are brothers) and four hens all around a year-year and a half old.
(3) What breeds do you have?
The cockerels are Breda, chicks are Easter Eggers, a mosaic, a naked neck/bantam, then the adults are two cochins, a red spangled Russian Orloff and a Mosaic.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
So far, the eggs and their personalities. They are so fun.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a professional quilter, but on the side I like to off road with my Jeep, adventure with my border collies and hang with my draft horses. I also love to garden!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have the most amazing, helpful and understanding husband. We moved to Montana in August 2021 and two days ago drove back to Oregon to retrieve my two draft horses and 14 chickens. Due to a sudden blizzard in the forecast that wasn't there when we left for Oregon, we had to cut our trip short and literally drove 18-19 hours straight to beat a blizzard. By the time my husband and I were able to crawl into bed, we had been awake for 41 hours. The horses and chickens were all snuggly in their new homes though, and we woke up to snow storm conditions. Which made our sacrifice totally worth it.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Found BYC on Facebook and had clicked on the link to the forum page from a Google search on something having to do with chickens. So, here I am.
