Hi all! I'm Audrey. You can also call me Vulpes or Jackal. Very long time lurker here (5 years according to my profile!) and I used BYC even before that, on a profile I've long since forgotten the info for. The reason I haven't had anything to say so far is because, well, I don't have chickens! :barnie

What brings me here, you ask? Well, to say that I grew up with chickens is an understatement. I spent the first 18 years of my life on my family's professional chicken farm. At our peak, we had almost 400 layers and 300 Cornish x at any given time, with every single bird on fresh pasture every day using movable chicken tractors. If anyone in the Silverton/Salem OR area remembers Forest Meadow Farm, that's my dad! Watching those birds free range kindled my love for these animals really early, and even after we moved into town a couple years ago and gave away our birds, that passion still remains. Nowadays, I live vicariously through my friends who have chickens and through reading threads and articles on here, counting the days until I can build my own homestead and bring chickens back into my life. Someday :fl

Some of my favorite topics are free ranging, chicken social dynamics, evolutionary history, and permaculture. I have a strong interest in heritage breeds like faverolles and cochins and I like ornamentals like seramas and d'uccles. However, my true interest lies in the landraces, like Icelandics and Penedesencas. I've never had the opportunity to keep them, but the fact that they're adapted to their environment instead of having traits selected for by a person is really cool to me.

Thank you all for reading, and for creating a welcoming community that's lasted for so many years!

well it’s nice to meet you!!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Most creatures we keep have been quite domesticated, so allowing them to live their lives in a more natural way becomes a very interesting study. They really are quite fascinating! Hopefully you get to keep a flock yourself soon. 😊

Welcome to our community!
