Hello!
I live in rural, west central Illinois. I work in a small office that is also located on a farm. We have chickens, ducks, peacocks, donkeys, cows, cats, and dogs. My boss bought her kids a Brinsea 7-egg incubator about 10 years ago, and we have hatched chickens since then, getting bigger incubators as we go. The birds are free range and roam the farm until nightfall. We have quite a variety including Polish, Americana, Buff Orpington, Brown Leghorn, Production Red, and Rainbow Dixies.
My boyfriend and I are renting a house in the country and I'm finally able to have chickens of my own. We hatched 44 chickens on April 8th at the office, and I am bringing 6 hens home within the next few weeks. We had a serendipitous situation happen as we were looking at coops, a lady came to get chicks and she had an old coop building free to a good home. We are getting ready to fix it up and bring our hens home!
My boss and I have googled a lot over the years, and have always found such great knowledge and funny stories on this site, it is about time to join the community. My favorite aspect of raising backyard chickens is the personalities of the chickens, and the benefit of farm fresh eggs.
I am getting ready to start my first year of teaching this fall and I'm so looking forward to incorporating some chicken fun into lessons. My boyfriend and I have a lab/border collie mix named Jenkins and a blue heeler named Gracie Lu. We also have 2 rescue cats, Salsa (thanks to my nephew's mispronunciation of Salem) and Sassy.
