Hello all P’rosa here!! It’s a Sunday and my brain isn’t functional right now so we are using the canned questions for the intro....

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are current in our 4th year raising ducks and chickens. We started with the obligatory TSC stock of 6 egg producer chicks. The following year we ordered a mixed bag of breeds and ducks. The next year a larger order of mixed breeds and more ducks AND at the same time a broody (chicken) hen was setting on 6 duck eggs.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Current we have 12 hens, 1 roo, 4 hen ducks and 4 drakes. The most here had in one time was close to 30 birds.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Currently...Speckled Sussex, black australorp, Easter eggers , welsummer, lavender Orpington, buff Orpington, golden laced Wyandotte, rhode island reds, welsh harlequin ducks (both silver and gold). In the past we had ISA Browns (egg machines) and cream legbars (sweet little birds, but not hardy)

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The entertainment! We love watching all the birds off doing their busy bird things as if they have a daily agenda. We also love educating non-chicken people about facts and myths of chickens and eggs. Some of those newly educated people have become egg customers.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Knitting, gardening, baking, soon to be canner

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We work in the pharmaceutical industry, so it’s nice to come home to something simple and serene as watching the chickens forage. We are parents to 3 ornery cats who rule the house and own us.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

We have know about BYC longer than we’ve owned chickens, during our research we’ve read many articles and threads from fellow chicken/duck owners. So we had a small idea of what we were getting ourselves into. We feel that we’ve enough experience and knowledge to help others who maybe experiencing the same issues or roadblocks we’ve run into and might be able to provide some insight or recommendations.
