Thought I'd make myself some scrambled quail egg for breakfast this morning and was surprised when one of the eggs produced a really deep orange yolk nearly red in appearance! anybody else had this happen? I take it what the quail ate has caused it to be this colour?

they are all on the same food but live in a pen outside

humm funny color...do you know what was different in the hens diet? looks like carrots or beets? it sure is pretty...did you eat it? if so did it taste different?

It was scrambled with 11 other eggs so I didn't really taste the difference

although their eggs are always scrummy! I do feed them carrot on and off but no more than usual and never had this, never fed them beets, did put some crushed chilli flakes in their feed once or twice though this only seems consistent to one hen as I found a few more similar in colour and pretty sure they were from the same hen, not quite sure which hen but the egg pattern was the same and I know each hen has their own unique egg pattern

When I see that type of colored egg, I say it's more nutritious - at least that's what happens to the eggs of a free range hen I had in the past.
