I wonder if they would make it through the shipping process. I have a bunch that are blown.
They are one of the coolest eggs I have ever seen or touched. Cracking them open is a whole different experience. The yolk is HUGE.....imagine a pile of mashed potatoes 1" thick with a diameter bigger than a softball.
My friend was afraid to crack one open to see if they were fertile, so she asked me to do it. WARNING you need a hammer to crack it!
Romur has it, if you can hatch a emu, you can hatch anything. We've hatch 5 now, its a looong wait, but man are they ever cute when they hatch. Good luck and keep us posted. If you have any questions on hatching it, ask away.............
Wow, it's great that you were able to get an emu egg. My emus lay their eggs in November/December, with the chicks hatching out the end of February.... then, they're done for the year. A friend of mine is indefinitely loaning me two cabinet incubators that he used when he raised emus commercially. I can't wait til next year to collect and hatch the eggs. I already have a waiting list of people who want to buy emu chicks next season.
Hope all goes well with your hatch! I never get tired of seeing little striped emu chicks and hope you'll post lots of pics!
49-52 days incubation period! Yeah can't wait to see what happens. My friends Emu has been laying since November and hasn't layed an egg in 5 days. I bet she is done for the year. Should have stuck several in the bator...but the bator wasn't ready in time.
As for what one does with Emu....many things. I am just doing it for the fun of it. Next year my friend and I are going to try our hand at several.
I just think that it is pretty cool that they have been around for like 80 million years....that's so total prehistoric it's unreal.
