I have been thinking about winter. Our winters in Iowa are pretty nasty and some of my girls (my buttercups especially) have some big combs. I like to sit out there and not freeze either. I have always been scared to run a heater because of the dust and fire hazard. I will run it when we have those wind chills and single digit temps. I have a draft free coop so I think I am going to be glad I got this.

I found this deal on ebay!

Way less than I have ever seen them priced and one other left!
I love my girls and my big boy Captain Morgan and this is going to be nice. I don't know if it will heat the whole coop but at least it will help.

All I know is that I looked at the ones on Shopthecoop.com (which have great products) and they wanted over a hundred dollars for one and this one has more wattage.
I think it will be cheaper to run than a utility heater too.

I have one that I used last winter. While it does work well and I feel safe with it, mine was small - - only 400W - - and it would only heat a relatively small coop, say 6' x 6' or so max. Even that would just take the sting out of a really cold night. I bought mine through Amazon.

The other thing to consider is that I kept the heater separated from my birds so it would not get touched or knocked over.

I do like these oil-filled flat heaters. There's very little in the way of nooks and crannies to fill with dust, etc. and they don't get so scorching hot. That said, I would still be very, very careful not to let it touch hay/straw, shavings, critters, or anything else flammable.

Hope that helps!

Oh, and OP, you did get a much better price!

Well $29 sounds pretty good, but did you see the shipping and handling charge? Get real! Now the cost is $50 and it doesn't sound nearly so attractive. I hate the practice of most online and TV sales of elevating the shipping and handling cost to make the price of their product look better. I might buy this at $40 plus $7.50 S&H, but I refuse to play their games.

Ah... thanks I feel better now.

If it would have been any more in price I wouldn't have paid the shipping. These things sell for a bunch and even with shipping I got a pretty good deal. A utility heater would cost me $30 and then to drive to town and take my time at the store. I live 40 miles one way from any place that I could even consider buying one of these, so gas and time is a value to me.
I do refuse to pay outrageous shipping charges, but I bet this heater cost about that much to ship.

I do plan to keep it seperated from the animals and anything that could get hot. My coop has a storage area that is 2 x 4's and welded wire and I'm thinking that is going to be a good place for it. Then it can be in the middle and close to the roost bars at night but not too close.

This is the area, but this pic is old. Now we have a big door in the middle and more 2x4's for more strengh. I think this is where I'm going to put it.

I agree with Schroeder about the shipping charges. It drives me nuts also. I always factor in gas and time (and no taxes, usually

) so I will buy things but it still bothers me.
I once overheard a person talking (I was waiting in the checkout line and couldn't walk away) about selling a book on ebay. She told her friend she sold it for $2.00 and charged $5.00 for shipping and it cost her less than a dollar to send it and she was bragging about how she "got them".
